Philanthropy remains strong despite global slowdown

Australia's major companies have continued to support and invest in our communities despite the tough economic conditions faced in 2009, according to a report released by the Australian Government today. Australian assistance to Mongolia

Australia will provide $1 million in assistance to Mongolia following the adverse humanitarian situation caused by severe weather conditions. The Government of Mongolia has appealed for food, medicines, heating supplies, and funds to buy food for livestock. We will channel our assistance through the UN and humanitarian agencies who can respond quickly on the ground in Mongolia.

On behalf of the Government and people of Australia I extend to the President and people of the Republic of Indonesia our sincere condolences on the passing of former Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid. Mr Wahid was also highly influential as a moderate Islamic leader in Indonesia and a strong advocate of ethnic and religious tolerance. Former President Wahid's historic visit to Australia in June 2001, the first by an Indonesian President since 1975, was a significant recognition of the importance of the bilateral relationship and set a positive tone for relations between Australia and Indonesia in the years that followed.
