A cutting-edge has been launched at the University of Sydney. The development of next generation optical fibres is one of the fields of critical world-leading research being undertaken at the Institute, which also houses the Australian Research Council's $19 million Centre of Excellence for Ultrahigh Bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems. The Institute is home to more than thirty academic and research staff and forty postgraduate students.

The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) today agreed to develop a national telephone emergency warning system. The Commonwealth will invest up to $15 million to assist the States and Territories to establish the national system. COAG has agreed to undertake collaborative research with industry on ways to deliver warning messages to mobile phones based on the handset's physical location.

The Minister for Home Affairs, Bob Debus, today announced the appointment of Mr Gary Rake as the next Chief Executive of the National Capital Authority. Mr Debus said Mr Rake's appointment demonstrated the Commonwealth Government's commitment to the national capital through the Authority. 'I look forward to working with Mr Rake and the NCA in the lead up to the Centenary of Canberra in 2013.'.

The Minister for Ageing, Mrs Justine Elliot today officially visited the construction site of a new $8.6 million dementia-wing at aged care facility on the NSW far North Coast. Bupa's aged care arm, Bupa Care Services entered the Australian market in December 2007. Bupa Care Services is the second largest private aged care provider in Australia with 47 facilities across New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and the ACT.

The Minister for Ageing Mrs Justine Elliot has ordered the independent Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency to conduct a major investigation into the procedures and processes at a Queensland nursing home where there have been reports of nursing home residents being bitten by mice. On April 28/29, the Accreditation Agency conducted an official visit to a Queensland nursing home run by Queensland Health. Karingal Nursing Home is an 80 bed aged care facility.

Senator Nick Sherry, Minister for Superannuation and Corporate Law, is pleased to announce the reappointment of five part-time members to the Superannuation Complaints Tribunal (SCT). The SCT was established by the Superannuation (Resolution of Complaints) Act 1993. Part-time members help to hear complaints.

SINGAPORE - Senator Nick Sherry, Minister for Superannuation and Corporate Law, today met with Singapore Minister for Finance, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and Singapore Minister for Law, Mr K. Minister Sherry also raised the Australian Government's desire to move forward - as a measure to signal both countries' confidence in regional capital markets and corporate legal regulation - with bilateral mutual recognition arrangements covering both managed/collective investment schemes and the disqualification of company directors. That would send a clear message from both countries that we are open for business and that we have confidence in normalising global capital markets,' said Minister Sherry.
