DIAC Newsroom – Media_releases – Darwin detainees transferred to Curtin

A group of detainees involved in the protest action at the Northern Immigration Detention Centre (NIDC) in Darwin yesterday were transferred to Curtin Immigration Detention Centre today. The detainees who were transferred were all adult male Afghans who were involved in yesterday's protest action. Curtin Immigration Detention Centre has capacity to accommodate them as all detention facilities are designed to be used flexibly.

A group of 20 people from seven countries will officially join the Australian family at a special citizenship ceremony in Burnie, Tasmania today to launch Australian Citizenship Day celebrations. They are the first of thousands of people who will become citizens on and around Australian Citizenship Day, which is celebrated each year on September 17. Ms Polden is a great example of an Australian citizen who inspires others and gives so much to her local community, a Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) spokesman said.

A group of 20 people from seven countries officially joined the Australian family at a special ceremony today in Burnie, Tasmania as Australian Citizenship Day 2010 was launched. Australian Citizenship Day was introduced in 2001 as an opportunity for people to take pride in our citizenship and reflect on the meaning and importance of being Australian, a Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) spokesman said. Australian Citizenship Day celebrations provide an occasion for all of us to be proud of being part of this great nation.

DIAC Newsroom – Media_releases – WA immigration detainee dies

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has confirmed a 30-year-old man found unconscious in Western Australia's Curtin Immigration Detention Centre (IDC) on Saturday (August 21) afternoon, has since died in hospital. As soon as he was found, ambulance and WA Police were notified while staff attempted to revive him. On August 22, he died.

Migrants and employers of skilled migrants in Port Hedland and Karratha will have an opportunity to meet the visiting Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) outreach officer between August 30 and September 3 to discuss immigration issues. A DIAC spokesman said the department's regional visits program enables people in communities outside the major metropolitan areas to sit down and talk about specific issues they may face directly with an immigration officer. The DIAC outreach officer will be available for individual appointments in Karratha between August 30 and September 2.

ACMA – ACMA media release 101/2010 – 20 August

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has given mobile premium service content supplier, Switchfire Pty Ltd, a formal direction to comply with the Mobile Premium Services Code following an investigation that found the company breached advertising rules. The ACMA is sending a clear and consistent message to content suppliers that it will act to protect mobile users from content providers who do not clearly represent the costs, terms and conditions of their services, said ACMA Chairman, Chris Chapman. In addition to the code, the ACMA has buttressed the code by making service provider determinations, which require all carriers to provide customers with the option of barring premium SMS and MMS, prevent industry from making contracts with unregistered content suppliers and give the ACMA the power to stop rogue operators from billing customers.

Airservices Australia – Media Releases

Airservices Australia has completed a major upgrade of its Very High Frequency (VHF) radio network to enhance communications between aircraft and air traffic controllers. As part of the project Airservices technicians replaced analogue and relay-based VHF radios with new digital equipment at 39 air traffic control communication sites in Australia including 26 aerodrome control towers. Airservices is working closely with Airways New Zealand to share regional expertise and experience in several areas, including the construction of several new air traffic control rowers.
